Windows 7 RC is finally available for public download here. The Windows 7 RC will allow you to run till June 1, 2010 before it expire. I’m quite excited to read that, according to the faq, you can install Window 7 RC onto a PC running Windows Vista without having to back up and reinstall your programs and data (although it’s encouraged that you do to make a backup for safe keeping). But in the future, you will still need to do a clean installation when trying to upgrade Windows 7 RC to the final version of Windows 7.
On the other hand, Windows XP or Windows 7 beta users will need to do a bit more work to get their PC up to windows 7 RC as you’ll need to backup your data, then do a clean installation of the RC, then reinstall your applications and restore your data. You can read Microsoft’s article on how to back up your PC for more details and a suggestion for how to backup a PC running Windows 7 Beta or Windows Vista.
Tech geeks were going crazy about leaked versions of Windows 7 Build 7077 and 7106 a while back last month. The chase is now finally over with a stable release candidate by Microsoft which, by the way, will download and install windows update for the RC if you remember to turn on automatic update after installation.
