Domain name is just like real estates. Most people know how to buy a new and unoccupied domain names but have no clue when it comes to checking out details about other people’s domain name, their expiration dates and how long it takes after the expiry date that you will be allowed to snap their name through backordering. For a start, ICANN has a very nice diagram showing the stages or lifecycle of a gTLD domain name.
I had read about domain hunters going after keyword rich gTLD domain names when they lost their jobs and the economic wasn’t doing that good at the time, and came back to form companies and networks (Kevin Ham might be a good example) when the boom returns and the internet started to took off.
If you haven’t do so, start looking for good domain names to register. Not a lot of people are optimistic about the economy these days but good domain names + some good content are real estates no matter what. And have a plan on what you want to do with the domain name (blog, directory, forum, domain parking etc) before you start registering.
