VMware is a company selling virtualization software. VMware’s desktop software (ex. VMWare Player, Workstation, vSphere, Fusion etc.) works on Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, while VMware’s enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi, are bare-metal embedded hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.
I started using VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation after joining a software company that sells software for engineering EPCs, firms, companies and owners. The reason of using VMWare Workstation was pretty simple. I had to install, configure, run, write software and test different versions of the company’s software in different systems.
To me, VMWare Workstation snapshots was the main attraction of the software. I can always take a “virtual snapshot” when I reach a stage where I’m happy with all the software configurations in the VM. A snapshot can serve as a backup or a reference point where I know I can come back to it in the future if anything goes after doing more work. I can’t imagine how much time this has saved me from reconfiguring settings. If anything goes wrong, I just rollback to a previous snapshot and start from there again. Take a look at what I mean by vmware snapshots.
And best of all, you can also share snapshots. Let’s say someone needs to do the same tedious work you’ve done and you happen to have a VM snapshot of it. Just create a full clone of that VM snapshot and share it with him/her. That will help them move along faster. Help out your friends, it’s good karma, and they will thank you later.
VMWare Converter is another nice freeware that allows you to convert your physical machine into a virtual machine.
If I’m ever going to buy a Mac or Macbook, VMWare Fusion will definitely be on my “must buy” list. This software allows people to install and run the whole Windows OS on Mac. I would be surprise if all my favorite programs written for Windows are all supported in Mac so that’s where VMWare Fusion comes in.
